Windows Update

**  Before you do anything, make sure you update Windows.

1.  Click -> Start.

2.  Click -> All Programs.

3.  Scroll up and click -> Windows Update.

4.  Select and install all updates from the window that pops up.  After the updates are complete.  Restart your computer and check again for updates.  Most times you installing updates open up more updates.

MSCONFIG

** Now that Windows is up-to-date, I am going to show you how to run MSCONFIG to see what programs are running in the background and how to shut them down.

1.  Click -> Start.

2.  Type “run” in the Search block.

3.  Click on the Run program at the top.

4.  In the window that pops up, type “msconfig” and click -> OK.

5.  In the window that pops up click the Startup tab

6.  In the Startup tab is a list of all of the programs that start up and run continuously when your computer boots up.  Uncheck all of them.

7.  Next click -> Apply, then -> OK.  You will be asked to Restart your computer, so do a Restart.  Once your computer reboots you should see a significant increase in speed.  You should run msconfig once a month after that.  99.9% of anything you install will start running in the background.

Internet Browser

Almost every computer I work on, the owner complains about slow internet and nine times out of ten the owner thinks it is their connection.  It could be your connection, but a lot of times it is the internet browser that you are using that is slowing it down.  Next I am going to walk you through how to check and fix this issue.
